Cosmetics is the favourite souvenir of Chinese tourists in Spain

The digital payments and services platform Alipay has published a report in which it ranks Spain as the fourth favourite country for Chinese tourism, behind only France, Italy and the United Kingdom. One of the main attractions that motivates Chinese tourists to choose Spain is shopping. Alipay states that the average expenditure made outside its territory during Golden Week (usually at the end of September and the beginning of October) outside Chinese borders already exceeds that of the same period in 2019. And cosmetics are one of the favourite products of Chinese tourists.Sources of the Government of Spain advanced at the beginning of August that the arrival of tourists from China had increased in the first six months of the year. The Spanish Tourism Institute (Turespaña) spoke of the recovery of the Asian market and hoped that in 2024, it would become the total recovery of the Chinese tourist. According to the same document, the number of tourists from China increased by 420% in the first half of 2023 and spending by 592%.Bain & Company's latest report also noted that the luxury market is expected to grow by 12% by 2023 and in the first three months of this year, consumption of personal luxury goods, which includes premium cosmetics, grew by between 9% and 11%. Meanwhile, the same report highlighted that fragrances and perfumery were experiencing exponential growth thanks to niche offerings and duty-free plays a crucial role in this data.The World Travel and Tourism Council presented last September its "Global Retail Tourism Trends and Insights 2023" and points out that Chinese visitors spent almost €2.5 billion in Spain. On average, according to the same organisation, WTCC, Chinese tourists spend up to €1256, with cosmetics and perfumery being their favourite areas of expenditure.
