The EcoBeautyScore environmental scoring system has officially debuted this month (July 2025) in Europe and the United Kingdom. Developed over three years by the EcoBeautyScore Association, a non-profit organization in collaboration with more than 70 brands and associations in the cosmetic sector, this label offers an ecological impact classification for personal care products based on a rigorous scientific model.

Endorsed and global methodology
The system is supported by the EU's Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology, evaluating 16 categories of environmental impact (water, soil, air...) throughout the product's life cycle, including formulation, packaging, use, and end of life. Each product receives a grade from A to E, with "A" being the minimum impact. This score is verified by external experts and independent audits.

First phase: initial categories
For now, the system is available for shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, and facial care, with plans for global expansion and new product formats during 2026.

Pioneering brands and mandatory transparency
Brands such as L’Oréal Paris, Neutrogena, Nivea Q10, and Eucerin have already started using the label in some European markets. In addition, the association requires that at least 75% of a brand's products in a category disclose their score, thus avoiding "selecting only the best-scoring ones."

Impact on consumers and the industry
According to some surveys, more than two-thirds of consumers believe that this label generates trust and plan to take it into account when buying. Jean‑Baptiste Massignon, general manager of the association, explains that the goal is to "enable more informed and sustainable choices" and offer brands data to help reduce their impact.

Beiersdorf, through its spokesperson Anke Pilzner, highlights that EcoBeautyScore is "unique in offering a holistic and transparent approach," something that other existing labels do not offer.

Challenges and future
The system seeks to combat greenwashing (the overexposure of unfounded ecological claims) and simplify communication to the consumer. There are still challenges ahead, such as expanding adoption by other categories and educating the public about the real meaning of the ratings.
