The Terrassa-based company specialising in active ingredients derived from plant stem cells continues to grow and celebrate success. In the heart of In-Cosmetics, a few kilometres from Barcelona, Vytrus Biotech received the first prize at the 'BSB Innovation Awards 2023' for its active ingredient 'Photobiome', the microbiota protector.

As it indicated the own company in an article elaborated recently for 'Next in Beauty', Photobiome helps the skin's microbiota to protect itself from itself, it nourishes the bacteria by modulating the release of its own natural photo-defence molecules to improve and attenuate the signs of the skin's photo-ageing process.

The active won first place at this year's 'BSB Innovation Awards' and recognises 'Photobiome's' biophysical mechanism of action based on a plant-based strategy. In addition, it opens a door and an opportunity for a new category of Microbial Antioxidants. It is a 100% natural active ingredient derived from pomegranate and cotton stem cells from desert and semi-arid regions of the Near and Middle East.

The BSB Innovation Awards founded in the year 2003, in Germany and have the aim to promote the world-wide diffusion of knowledges and organise a contest guaranteeing the objectivity, justice and independence to reward the innovation of the industry.

The new Sun-Microbiota-Skin axis

With 'Photobiome', Vytrus unveils its latest scientific advances in the field of microbiota and describes a new biological approach: the Sun-Microbiota-Skin axis, elucidating the important role of microbiota in relation to the effects of solar radiation on the skin, either to the benefit or detriment of skin tissue. The active ingredient combats skin photoageing due to excessive sun exposure by photoprotecting the skin microbiota.

Vytrus has opened a new paradigm in the sun care and anti-aging markets. A step forward and a scientific discovery in the field of microbiota, that allows new ways to protect and repair skin photodamage with a sustainable solution based on plant biotechnology: preventive and treating antioxidant formulations, photoaging treatment, preventive and repairing sun care formulations and treatments to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Vytrus Biotech Increases its sales 31% in 2022

Just one day after the announcement of the award, the Catalan asset management company announced another fantastic piece of news: the closing of 2022 with a 30% increase in EBITDA and a new record turnover. It ended 2022 with 3.7 million euros and a gross profit of 1.5 million euros, 30% more than in the same period of the previous year.

Vytrus COO and co-founder Albert Jané explained in a press release that this growth is a sign of strength in a current scenario in which inflation and economic instability are the protagonists. For his part, Óscar Expósito, CSO and co-founder, also added that "in addition to the good business figures, 2022 has given us the award of a triple patent in Europe, USA and Japan, which reinforces the company's commitment to leading technological innovation and setting trends in the cosmetics sector."

Following the results, the company has become the second most profitable company on the Spanish stock market in 2022. The company closed 2022 with a capitalisation of more than €24 million, an increase of 98% since its debut on BME Growth, the SME stock market, in March.
