Norway has returned to the forefront of sports news led by a protagonist: Erling Haaland. What no one expected was that, after years out of a competition like the World Cup, Ståle Solbakken's team would achieve one of the greatest feats in its World Cup history by stopping the Brazilian dream, with Erling Haaland as the main star. A country accustomed to watching football from the sidelines has suddenly become the surprise and revelation of the tournament. And, as in the rest of our series, this unexpected focus is the perfect excuse to delve into its beauty industry, a sector that, far from the media noise, has been building its own narrative for years: that of skin that survives and reinvents itself in one of Europe's most hostile and adverse climates.A small market but with export appetiteOn the global board of cosmetic trade, Norway occupies a modest but stable position: its sector exports were valued at 29.9 million dollars, placing it 220th out of 1,205 countries analyzed in 2024, with Sweden as the main destination, absorbing 11.1 million dollars. The balance, however, clearly leans towards the import side: the Nordic country bought 377 million dollars in cosmetics, occupying position 52 out of 1,215, with France leading the suppliers, followed by the United States, Germany, Italy, and Poland.Despite this, the "Norwegian appetite" for skin care shows no signs of slowing down. After a growth of between 20% and 25% last year, forecasts point to an expansion of between 10% and 15% this year, with e-commerce as one of the major drivers, even though the growth rate moderates compared to the previous year. Platforms such as Blivakker, Farmasiet, and Apotek1 concentrate a good part of these online purchases, while Scandinavian Cosmetics dominates the physical terrain as the main regional player, with a market share of 35% in Norway.The trend is not exclusive to the country: throughout Nordic Europe, sustainability and the ethical origin of ingredients have become purchasing criteria as decisive as the product's own efficacy, a sensibility that pushes local brands to compete less on promises and more on transparency. In neighboring Sweden, the thermometer confirms the fever for facial care: the skincare sector grows 8.59% year-on-year and is projected to reach 1.39 billion dollars in 2032, with demand focused on multifunctional formulas capable of repairing the skin barrier, punished by the constant contrast between the outdoor cold and indoor heating.The brands that are writing the Nordic narrativeIf anything characterizes the Norwegian landscape, it is the coexistence between dermoscientific cosmetics and small laboratory craftsmanship. Face Formula, formerly Elixir Cosmeceutical, repositioned itself in 2025 as a professional dermocosmetic brand, claiming 18 years of clinical expertise and a philosophy that understands skin as an organ in constant change, subjected to stress, hormones, lifestyle, and climate.At the opposite, more artisanal end, RÅ Skincare elaborates its formulas in a small Norwegian laboratory, without traditional preservatives and prioritizing quality over product shelf life, which has made it one of the reference brands for sensitive skin. Vessi bets on strengthening the skin barrier with typical regional ingredients, such as Nordic berries, while Nordic Formula transfers clinical quality and aesthetician experience to home use. The map closes with Frøya Organics, with balms made from wild Norwegian plants and a markedly local identity seal.All of them share the same obsession: antioxidants and anti-inflammatory active ingredients, aligned with the concerns of the rest of European consumers, but resolved with raw materials that only the Arctic can offer.The green gold of the Arctic: algae and its hydrating powerIf there is one ingredient that condenses the identity of Norwegian skincare, it is arctic and glacial algae. Their deep hydration capacity and antioxidant effect have made them the star active ingredient in the region, thanks to their high content of fucoidans and sulfated polysaccharides, compounds that offer superior water retention to hyaluronic acid and generate a protective barrier against transepidermal water loss. In addition to this hydrating function, they have a cryoprotective effect: their high concentrations of polyphenols and amino acids act as a natural filter against radiation and extreme cold, neutralizing free radicals, while inhibiting enzymes such as collagenase and elastase, responsible for sagging and wrinkles.Three species stand out in this panorama: Saccharina latissima (Sugar Kelp). Brown algae from the cold currents of the North Atlantic, rich in alginates and mannitol. It acts as a moisture magnet, regulates sebum, and calms cellular inflammation. Palmaria palmata (Dulse). Arctic red algae resistant to tidal changes, with a high content of B vitamins and amino acids. It is used to inhibit melanin synthesis, blurring spots and providing luminosity. Inhabits the arctic coasts most exposed to waves and stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin, earning a reputation as a natural "lifting effect" ingredient.Five pillars of the same storyLeaving aside the specific formulas and ingredients we have seen previously, Norwegian skincare is built on a coherent and recognizable narrative throughout its industry: protection against extreme weather, which strengthens the skin barrier against cold, wind, snow, and low humidity; Nordic-sourced ingredients such as algae, arctic berries like cloudberry and lingonberry, birch, and omega-rich oils. The minimalism of "less but better," with simple routines and multifunctional formulas; high tolerance, with the absence of perfume and aggressive alcohols in brands like RÅ or BAD NORWEGIAN; and, finally, sustainability and local production, with manufacturing in Norway and traceability as a seal of guarantee.
