Innovation is at the heart of the cosmetics industry, and at Special Chemicals, this concept goes beyond the development of new ingredients: it involves transforming science to offer effective and sustainable solutions. Martí Sarrate, Sales Manager of the company, shares with us how they are revolutionising the sector with their latest technologies and strategic vision. From advanced encapsulation to the use of microalgae, we discover how Special Chemicals is shaping the future of cosmetics.
- What is innovation for Special Chemicals?
Innovation is the engine that drives progress in cosmetic science, continually redefining the boundaries of what is possible. For a company dedicated to developing cosmetic actives, innovation means not only creating new ingredients, but also transforming traditional approaches to deliver solutions that are more effective, sustainable and aligned with consumer needs.
- What new ingredients or technologies have you developed recently that could transform the cosmetics market?
We have worked hard to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as biotechnology and encapsulation, allowing us to develop more functional actives, with better bioavailability and visible results on the skin.
Last October at Cosmetorium and in November at In-Cosmetics Asia in Bangkok, we presented our new SCH ShellCare® SCALP, a multifunctional active with encapsulation technology designed to maintain a healthy scalp and promote hair skinnification, offering visible and long-lasting hair care benefits as well as a sense of well-being and comfort.
At Beauty Innovation Days we will launch our new active ingredient line, SCH AlgaeTech™, based on a sustainable microalgae production system for high quality cosmetic actives.
- What has it meant for Special Chemicals to be a manufacturer and distributor? Why did you feel the need to take this step? Is it better to deal with the customer and know their needs first hand?
For Special Chemicals, moving from only distributing other companies' assets to manufacturing our own has been a key strategic shift. This has allowed us not only to maintain the distribution of third-party products, but also to have full control over the development, quality and innovation of our cosmetic actives. The need to take this step arose from a desire to diversify and expand our business, adapt to growing market demands and offer more unique and customised solutions to our customers, all while maintaining our ability to distribute third-party products to further expand our global footprint.
- With a presence in markets from South Korea to Latin America, what are Special Chemicals' future plans for international expansion?
Our vision for international expansion focuses on strengthening our footprint in strategic regions and exploring new horizons. We prioritise entry into emerging markets in Asia and Africa, while consolidating partnerships in Europe and Latin America. Our focus is on tailoring our cosmetic solutions to the specific demands of each region, while maintaining our commitment to innovation, sustainability and excellence.
- How has the company managed to keep up in a constantly evolving market with more informed consumers?
Adaptation and innovation is the key to success in a changing market. In a constantly evolving environment and with increasingly informed consumers, our company has been able to stay ahead of the curve through a combination of key factors. Continuous innovation in the development of cosmetic actives, underpinned by science and sustainability, enables us to offer solutions that not only respond to trends, but lead them. In addition, our ability to listen to and understand changing consumer needs drives us to create personalised and effective products. This approach, coupled with building relationships of trust and transparency, ensures our relevance in a demanding and competitive marketplace.
- Which emerging sectors within cosmetics do Special Chemicals see as having the greatest potential for growth over the next five years? Have you identified any specific ingredient demands that you anticipate will become trends in the coming years?
Emerging trends in cosmetic ingredients focused on menopause. In the coming years, menopause is gaining attention as a life stage that demands specific cosmetic solutions. We have identified a growing demand for ingredients that address the particular challenges associated with this hormonal transition, such as dryness, loss of firmness and skin sensitivity. We have a lot of work to do in the industry overall.
- What are Special Chemicals' goals for the year?
Launch innovative new ingredients: Introduce at least two new cosmetic actives to the market, focusing on advanced encapsulation technologies, biotech and sustainable actives, designed to address key trends such as menopausal skincare, personalisation and protection against environmental aggressors.
Commercial expansion: Consolidate our presence in strategic markets such as Asia and Latin America, while exploring new opportunities in emerging regions.
Commitment to sustainability: Implement new circular economy initiatives in the production and development of ingredients, minimising environmental impact at all stages of the process.

Keeping the team happy: The team is the heart of our company and the key to our continued success, bringing innovation, expertise and collaboration. Their commitment enables us to lead in the cosmetics industry, developing sustainable solutions tailored to the needs of the market.
- What are the company's long-term plans?
Special Chemicals, dedicated to the distribution and manufacture of cosmetic actives, has a clear vision for the future, focused on three fundamental pillars:
- Innovation leadership: We will continue to invest in R&D to develop revolutionary ingredients that respond to changing market demands. We will focus on advanced biotechnology, next-generation encapsulation and science-backed natural actives, offering effective and differentiated solutions.
- Commitment to sustainability: Our objective is to consolidate our position as a benchmark in sustainability, prioritising eco-efficient processes, the responsible use of natural resources such as microalgae and developing ingredients that reduce the environmental impact throughout the value chain.

We are committed to establishing local partnerships that enhance our ability to offer products tailored to the specific needs of each region.
