The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has published its first 2024 Cosmetic Product Market Control Report, a balance sheet that confirms its commitment to safety and transparency in the beauty sector.
Over the past year, the AEMPS carried out 1,764 controls on cosmetic products marketed in Spain. Of these, 14% required the adoption of corrective measures to guarantee regulatory compliance and consumer protection.
What has been detected the most?
Among the most common incidents, the report indicates:
-
The presence of prohibited or restricted ingredients.
-
Labeling errors, from ingredients to warnings.
-
Deficiencies in safety reports.
-
Microbiological contaminations.
-
Irregularities in the notification to the European Cosmetic Products Portal (CPNP).
Depending on the risk, the measures adopted by the AEMPS included market withdrawal, cessation of marketing, or recovery of products already distributed.
### A More Vigilant 2024
The agency also published 16 informational notes related to cosmetic safety:
-
7 for contamination,
-
5 for efficacy or safety issues,
-
and 4 for the use of unauthorized substances.
In addition, 64 national alerts were issued and cases were reported to the European Safety Gate system, which in 2024 recorded more than 1,500 cosmetic alerts, with 93 of them directly linked to Spain.
A step further towards a safer beauty market
The AEMPS positively assesses the progress of the last year, highlighting the collaboration with the autonomous communities and the improvement in alert and traceability systems.
For the upcoming fiscal years, the Agency plans to maintain a risk-based approach, strengthening controls on products with the greatest potential impact on public health and on online sales channels.
