2025 surpasses, according to the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), in terms of valid notifications for undesirable effects in cosmetics, 2024. As the AEMPS points out, throughout last year, 117 notifications have been received, 30% more if compared to 2024.
Regarding the seriousness of these 117 notifications, the body responsible for evaluating the safety of cosmetic and sanitary products, has detailed that 68% were not serious, and in contrast, in 2024, this percentage was higher considering that 54% of the notifications were indeed considered serious.
In the AEMPS Annual Cosmetovigilance Report, it is also detailed what type of cosmetic receives this notification, with skin care being the category with the highest number of notifications, specifically, 50. It is followed by hair care, with 16, skin cleansing, with 12, and sun products with 10.
The symptomatology of the unwanted effects that was most repeated in 2025 was non-specific dermatitis in 55 of the cases, allergic dermatitis with 17 cases, and ocular symptoms/conjunctivitis with 11 and inflammatory and irritative oral symptomatology with 9.
The woman is the one who most suffers the unwanted effect of cosmetics with 82% and the man in 14%.
The AEMPS has also registered the European notifications and has collected in 2025 a total of 246 notifications. 106 of them were for products classified in the skin care category, being the one that accumulates the most notifications, far from the second, hair care with 29, skin cleansing with 28, and hair dyes with 26. Regarding symptomatology, consumers mostly report allergic contact dermatitis, non-specific dermatitis, conjunctivitis or other ocular symptoms, and irritant contact dermatitis. 9% of the cases of these notifications required hospitalization, while 89% have caused temporary or permanent functional disability.
