BASF has announced that its entire production of amines in Europe will be carried out using 100% renewable electricity. This transition includes production facilities in Ludwigshafen (Germany) and Antwerp (Belgium).
Amines are essential components in numerous cosmetic products, such as face powders, shaving creams, hair dyes and hair sprays, where they act as emulsifiers, foaming agents, pH regulators or aromatic ingredients.
With this measure, BASF expects to reduce approximately 188,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually compared to the base year 2020, representing an average decrease of 8% in the product carbon footprint (PCF) across its entire portfolio of amines. This change will not require recertifications or modifications to the ordering processes, thus facilitating the adaptation of customers.
This initiative is part of the efforts of BASF's Intermediates division to achieve its goal of reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to 2018 levels. According to Vasilios Galanos, Senior Vice President of the division in Europe, this transformation positions BASF as a preferred partner in sustainable solutions for the chemical industry.
